Annotations for Dead Star

Lyric: Failing to impress
Annotation:
The speaker may feel that they are ‘failing to impress’ this person, and that’s why they are seeming to feel distant from the speaker.

Lyric: Wasting and burning out
 You’re fading like a dead star, woah-oh
 Harm is coming your way
 Yeah, it’s coming your way
Annotation:
If the first three lines of this first stanza are a reference to American Exceptionalism, then the remaining lines finish the implied pot-shot by describing the fall of the hegemony (or at least the image of invulnerability) with the fading light of the dead star, one of the greatest power sources in the universe fading into obscurity.

Lyric: Why can’t you sleep with
 Someone who’ll protect you? Yeah
 Harm is coming your way
 Yeah, it’s coming your way
Annotation:
The person he is singing about is very “loose” and sleeps around alot instead of getting a steady relationship with someone who can protect and love them for real.

Lyric: Shame on you for thinking
 You’re all alone, na-ta-ka-bsch
If you want, I’ll make you wish you were
Annotation:
This person imagines that he/she is the lonliest person on earth or something like that, but that’s not entirely true. Matt is angry with this person for not realizing he/she is not as lonley as they think they are. He says that if this person wants to know real lonliness he’ll be glad to show them what that is.

Lyric: You used to be everything to me
Now you’re tired of fighting (Fighting)
 Tired of fighting, fighting yourself
 Yourself, yourself, yourself
Annotation:
This person he is singing about used to mean alot to him, maybe this was a person who was feeling very bad, and maybe stuck in a loop of negative thoughts. He is now angry at this person for stop fighting to become a better person. This person gave up instead and let the bad take over them.
